Project: The Pinot Noir Project

Introduction

Thank you for your interest in participating in this research project. The following few pages will provide you with further information about the project, so that you can decide if you would like to take part in this research.

Please take the time to read this information carefully. You may ask questions about anything you don’t understand or want to know more about.

Your participation is voluntary. If you don’t wish to take part, you don’t have to. If you begin participating, you can also stop at any time.

What is this research about?

Pinot Noir is globally recognised as a high value, high risk commodity, requiring careful management in site selection, vineyard and winery interventions. It is one of the most mythologised, storied, and culturally enriched grape varieties, which makes it both an industry benchmark yet also presents a barrier to breaking out of its historical mould. The purpose of this research is to find out more about how and why Pinot Noir has attained and maintained this position in the global market, drawing on individual engagement with and understanding of Pinot Noir grapes and wine from across the academic, consumer, intermediary and producer communities.

What will I be asked to do?

Should you agree to participate you will be asked to participate in an online or written survey and/or an oral interview of around 15 minutes duration – either face to face or via zoom – to answer a list of questions related to your engagement with and understanding of Pinot Noir grapes and wine. This interview will be recorded.

What are the possible benefits?

Benefits include increased knowledge about the positioning of Pinot Noir grapes and wine in the global market.

What are the possible risks?

There are no identifiable risks in participating in this research. There may be minimal inconvenience due to the time commitment required.

Do I have to take part?

No. Participation is completely voluntary. You are able to close the survey at any time, withdraw from interviews at any time and withdraw any identifiable data already collected.

Will I hear about the results of this project?

You will be able to access results via the website www.thepinotnoirproject.org. Results will also be published in refereed journal articles that participants will be able to access online.

What will happen to information about me?

Participants’ data will be de-identified. Electronic, audio-visual and written data will be stored securely by the Project Supervisor at the University of Melbourne. This data will be stored in perpetuity and will not be made available for public release. It may be used for extended research related to this project involving the researchers listed on this project.
